OPPM helps utility manage regulatory challengeUK Utility

Revenue: 15bn

Operations: 2 countries

Employees: 22,000

Synopsis: This utility is a British multinational electricity and gas utility company with its principal activities in the UK and Northeastern US. It has a primary listing on the London Stock Exchange, and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index.

This utility, like many suffered from two things:

  • a regulatory that did not believe anything it was being told by the company
  • a key legacy system that had been adapted, extended way beyond its economic life to an extent that it now seriously impacted the management of the business’ capital investment management

This utility had an legacy Asset management solution that had been customised and contorted to manage this organisation’s not inconsequential capital investment portfolio. Due to this, the organisation was unable to upgrade the core Asset Management functionality therefore reducing its ability to manage aging assets effectively – which in turn affected its regulatory outcomes.

HPS failed to win this work alongside a Systems Integrator (SI) when it was initially tendered. The successful SI was unable to deliver the high level architecture within 6 months of appointment and so reached out to HPS to assist. HPS documented the High Level Systems Architecture and was asked to continue the project without the SI.

HPS implemented Oracle Primavera Portfolio Management (OPPM) software, configured it to meet the demands of the business and enable this utility to:

  • report to the regulatory on a timely basis
  • accurately report the portfolios status
  • be able to provide supporting documentation as to changes in the portfolio
  • manage the development and execution of the Asset portfolio
  • upgrade the Asset Management solution to the latest version
  • provide management information to the data lake

We delivered the solution, on-time within budget and to original scope. We used the following approach:

  • Waterfall was used to plan the overall project
    • Environment Setup (Dev, Test, Prod, DR)
    • Software Installation
  • Agile was used in each of the workstreams
    • Governance and Gated Approvals
    • Asset Identification and Estimation
    • Financial Model
    • SVoP
    • Forms for New Scheme Creation, Scheme Business Case, Scheme Update
    • Security
  • Integrations
    • SAP
    • Elipse
  • Data identification, clean and load

HPS implemented Oracle Primavera Portfolio Management (OPPM) software with a collaborative team including several System Integrators, another software company and many independent consultants.

The outcome was to enable utility to:

  • report to the regulatory on a timely basis
  • accurately report the portfolios status
  • collect store and provide when required the supporting evidence on Capital Asset activity
  • upgrade the Asset Management solution to the latest version
  • provide management information to the data lake for better executive decision making
